Node.js @ Paypal
12:00 PM - 12:20 PM

The talk is the story of how introducing OSS in Paypal
• Triggered open sourcing solutions/frameworks/patterns that we built in house.
• Enabled an open source mindset across teams within Paypal.
• Enabled openness to experiment with cutting edge technologies (like react.js and angular.js) for specific product needs
• Empowered engineers to participate in the node.js OSS community by github participation, conference representations and idea/experience sharing on the engineering blog.

Engineering Professional Practices within FLOSS Communities. An Oxymoron?
12:20 PM - 12:40 PM
LEVEL: Intermediate

Engineering professional practices offer numerous benefits for students looking to gain real-world experience before they graduate. Are brick-and-mortar companies the only possible way of gaining real-world experience? In this presentation we justify why the participation in a FLOSS community project is a valid professional real-world experience, especially suitable for nontraditional students, and we also outline a plan to implement these practices.

Design Considerations for Open Source Software Development
12:40 PM - 1:00 PM

Open source software makes it possible to leverage the experience and skills of software engineers all over the world, to reuse and build on the existing technology to solve common problems. This talk highlights how open source software development encourages good software design and development practices and presents Presto, an open source distributed SQL query engine, as a case study.
